Does an RN get paid more than a pediatric nurse?
I don’t know what online site you were looking at, but a peds nurse IS an RN the vast majority of times. And in most hospitals, it isn’t the specialty area that you work in (such as peds, ER, cardiac, OR, etc.) that determines your pay, usually it’s based on your experience level. Many hospitals have unions that pay staff nurses the same pay across the board no matter the position, and increases are based only on seniority. The difference between pediatrics and adults in terms of nursing isn’t much – you just become more familiar with the common conditions of childhood as opposed to the common conditions of older adults. As an RN you are trained to work with a variety of populations in a variety of settings, so there is no special education necessary to do any RN job – it is the hospital’s responsibility to provide all the unit-specific or specialty area-specific education that you would need to care for your primary target population and those common conditions.
