Does an employee receive the shift differential premium for holidays or vacation time not worked?
It can be argued that the differential applies for the inconvenience of reporting for a second or third shift, and that regular base rates for the applicable job classification are proper when calculating holiday pay. But the policy should specify which is the case. Similar consideration should also be given to vacation pay calculation. Does the differential apply to temporary assignments? Temporary assignments to other shifts should be considered -does the shift differential travel with the employee to all assignments? For example, it may be proper to cease paying a differential if an employee is moved temporarily from the night shift to normal day hours since there is no longer the element of inconvenience for reporting at night hours. Similarly, second shift employees might be occasionally assigned to weekend hours when it is common to pay time-and-one-half. It must be determined whether the weekend pay is calculated with regard to the regular base rate for the job or the base rate
