AMTA is committed to minimising the environmental impact of mobile phones and this includes ensuring the materials collected through MobileMuster are not dumped in developing countries where there is a lack of technologies and skills to process these materials in an environmentally safe manner. While mobile phones present no environmental or human health hazard in ordinary use, harmful substances such as cadmium or dioxins can be released into the environment from landfills, incinerators and recovery facilities if not handled properly. AMTA acknowledges that refurbishment is a legitimate industry and should only be undertaken by accreditated mobile phone repairers.
