Does Amazon charge taxes? Whats the deal with taxes on online purchases?
The Amazon.com help pages are a great resource. The taxes charged are based on a number of different factors. It depends on where the item is shipping to and who is shipping it. Third party sellers will calculate the taxes into the cost of the item most of the time. Think of online as like a store. If you come from a tax exempt state, you don’t pay sales tax. If you come from a state that charges tax, then that tax is calculated based on your states sales tax amount. If you do come from a tax exempt state, all you have to do is call Amazon.com Customer Service (from the help pages!) and they will refund the taxes for you. It’s really simple! If the order is shipping from a third party seller, then you may want to contact that seller about their salex tax policy. All of this is explained much better on the help pages on Amazon.com.
