Does all flight attendants have to know how to swim?
Actually, no. Most airlines do not require cabin (or cockpit) crewmembers to demonstrate swimming ability, and it is not required in the US by Federal Aviation Regulations. Some larger carriers, particularly those that fly internationally conduct pool training for selected individuals, but most airlines do not, simply because of the cost factor. Flight attendants at smaller regional or express airlines pretty much don’t ever go into a pool for training- it’s just too expensive, and the high turnover rate makes the logistics impossible. What you do need to be able to do is demonstrate how to use safety equipment. You’ll also be trained on firefighting procedures, and basic first aid. If you do have to do poolside/water training, you’ll need to demonstrate that you can float and move around in the water (using a life jacket), as well as how to operate/board an inflatable raft.
