Does ‘Ai Pono encourage weight loss surgery?
The ‘Ai Pono Body Balance Program neither encourages nor discourages weight loss surgery, a procedure which we believe is a personal decision made between a patient and her or his doctor. We provide a supportive environment for those seeking relief from food and weight issues, regardless of how they choose to do so. However, we believe that for those who choose to have bariatric surgery, it is imperative that they understand not only the physiological risks, but the psychological risks as well. We discuss those risks in the program. We view bariatric surgery as a tool for dealing with weight loss, but not one that addresses the causes of binge and compulsive eating behaviors. If those underlying issues are not addressed, the weight lost from surgery may be regained and post-surgical medical complications can arise.
