Does adopting an open source development approach within a firms IT organization work?
A close colleague carrying out an assessment of a client’s IT organization received feedback from several of her client’s developers expressing interest in adopting an open-source styled software delivery approach. When she asked my opinion on the matter, my initial reaction was skeptical. Although I wanted to tell her this was a bad idea, on further consideration, I thought it best to keep an open mind on the subject and see what others felt. As I understand it, the developers expressed vision would not include opening source code to the global development community, rather they espouse the firm’s in-house development staff have the freedom to devote their time and energy to specific development projects they have a passion for. In other words, the in-house developers would be analagous to the world community on a typical open source project, but the projects would be limited strictly to in-house development efforts. Hense, my question. Has anyone out there seen such a model implement
