Does adding hot pepper to the seed deter the squirrels?
Hot pepper sold under the trade name, Squirrel-Away, can be somewhat effective in deterring squirrels. It is not fool proof and many of my customers claim that it does not really work. The birds are unaffected by the pepper. We believe, however, that there are much better ways of controlling squirrels such as using baffles and squirrel-proof feeders.
