Does active management of cerebral perfusion pressure affect creatinine clearance in head injured patients?
Research summary: Severe head injured patients in intensive care receive hypertonic saline and noradrenaline infusions in order to increase cerebral perfusion pressure. It is not known what effect these measures have on the function of the healthy kidney. The project aims to identify whether glomerular hyperfiltration occurs by assessing eight- hour creatinine clearance on patients undergoing active management of cerebral perfusion pressure following head injury. We believe identifying whether glomerular hyperfiltration occurs will enable appropriate dosage adjustment of renally cleared drugs, especially antibiotics.
