Well, I installed Abiword 2.2.7, (running Ubuntu Hoary, Gnome 2.10.) I began to type a document, and I couldn’t believe what Abiword did to the text. To my horror I noticed that proper tracking is practically nonexistent in Abiword. Kerning is nearly as bad. Also, hyphenation doesn’t work, even though it seems that it should work automatically (since I have the option to disable it.) Another disappointment: SmartQuotes isn’t so smart. Quotation marks show up as generic inch marks. HELLLOOOOO !!! Character mapping!! MS solved these problems years ago. These problems were also present in previous Abiword versions. I’m shocked beyond words that not only are some important features nearly crippled on Abiword, but that it practically butchers text. It isn’t my printer, either. CUPS works just fine, and I have an HP Deskjet 5150 – a failry standard printer with the proper drivers installed.
