Does a wireless router need to be plugged into a phone line in order to work?
Yes, they need to be plugged in to a phone jack though it is possible to get DSL without land line service running to that jack. The range varies depending on the signal. Most moderately priced routers use B/G but the newer standard is N which gets greater distance. The packaging of any router or your provider will tell you what range to you can expect.
