Does a whippet make a good pet?
Your only issue here is leaving a puppy for 8 hours a day – not good. An adult dog is much less a problem as Whippets are lazy dogs and whilst they love a run, they are equally happy sleeping the day round – especially if you leave a radio on low for them to listen to! Ours is 3 and would sleep 20 hours a day if she could! As for running, you will hear a lot of people saying that they need to run in short sprints and that long runs are no good. This is a fallacy. Certainly they love sprinting all over the place and can easily tire themselves out in about 15 minutes. However, they are more than capable of going on very very long walks and whilst you may be jogging, it’ll be little more than a fast walk for Whippet (given that they travel at 35mph+). Also if they are off the lead when you run, they will forage and explore and trot along to catch up when they are ready – assuming you have the type of Whippet that will not run off completely (some do). 1 – 3 miles of jogging will be a nice
