Does a tropical pitcher plant go dormant?
Answer Hi Bill, I’m assuming that by tropical pitcher plant you mean Nepenthes, Southeast Asian pitcher plants. There are actually 3 different genus of tropical pitcher plants, each with very different cultural conditions. Nepenthes don’t really have a dormancy period, but in cultivation they tend to stop pitcher production during the winter when days are short. They just grow leaves then. Several Nepenthes are good beginners plants. A couple recommendations I have are Nepenthes sanguinea, and a hybrid called “deRooses alata”. Both of these do great as houseplants without any special conditions. They just need a sunny window and regular watering.
