Does a temporary foreign worker receive health coverage?
Provinces associated with the Eligibility and Portability Agreement, which includes PEI, will provide health coverage if a work permit is issued for at least one year. This is an agreement between the provinces and a guideline for provinces to go by so that coverage is uniform across the board. While it is not stated on the Health Departments website, historically PEI has provided health coverage on all work permits issued for six months or longer. Six months is the minimum required to be eligible for and maintain health coverage, and PEI provides coverage for the validity period of the work permit. The worker must register with the Department of Health upon arrival in PEI, and coverage will be effective from the PEI arrival date, or the start date of the permit, whichever is the later date. The Department of Health recommends that potential employers contact their office prior to a foreign worker arriving in the Province. This way they will know what is required and what documents are
