Does a telescope have to be used in the country, away from city lights?
Even though a dark-sky environment is ideal for viewing, many objects (like nebulae and galaxies) can be observed quite effectively in an urban environment. The Moon and planets, for example, can be studied about equally well in either a city or country setting. The basic rule is that while observations made outside the city generally reveal more detail, particularly in deep space, there are still a great many objects within the grasp of a small telescope in urban areas.
