Yes, a statue REPRESENTS whatever the artist intended. But a statue of Mary is not Mary; a statue of Ganesha is not Ganesha. It may help a person keep focused on the entity to which they pray, but it is not the entity itself. P.S. I’d love to see a cow mow. Do they use a hand-pushed mower or a ride-on one?
