Does a school district have to do the retrofits to qualify for the new bus grant?

Yes, the school district must agree to purchase and install the combination of 20 retrofits in order to qualify for the bus replacement grant match (awarded school district will be reimbursed for the purchase and installation of the retrofits). The only exemption is if all school bus models 2003 or older in the school district fleet already have both diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) and closed crankcase ventilation systems (CCVs) installed. Another exception is for small school districts that may not have enough schools buses in their fleet that qualify for the retrofits. They may apply for the total combination of the diesel oxidation catalysts or closed crankcase ventilation systems on school buses that qualify. In either case, the school district must explain why it is applying for fewer than 20 retrofits on the BEEP grant application form. The grant application will be disqualified for the new bus grant match if the retrofits will not be done.
