Does A Sanctuary Lamp Always Burn In Catholic Church?
A sanctuary lamp (light, candle) is only lit or burning when the Blessed Sacrament is present on that particular altar (usually residing in that altar’s tabernacle). If the Blessed Sacrament is not present, then the sanctuary lamp is not lit. The lamp is actually a sign of whether the Blessed Sacrament is present or not.
