Does a provider need a member or patients signed authorization from UnitedHealthcare in order to release PHI?
All activities of UnitedHealthcare fall within payment and health care operations; therefore, a member’s signed authorization is not needed for a provider to release PHI to UnitedHealthcare. This includes but is not limited to: medical management review, case management, authorizations for service, payment, chart review for credentialing, auditing functions, HEDIS® (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set), and peer review.
