Does a Prairie Cherry look and taste like cherries bought at the store?
Cherries bought in the store are called sweet cherries(Prunus avium) and there are many different named cultivated varieties (cultivars). Some popular cultivars are Bing, Lapins and Rainier, which is a yellow skinned cherry. Sweet cherries are typically hardy only to about -27C, so it would be very difficult to grow in Saskatchewan. They are grown in locations such as British Columbia, Washington State and Eastern Canada and the U.S. Sweet cherries are very large and very good to eat fresh, but they are typically not used in processed products because they contain relatively low amounts of fruit sugar and acid, both of which are required to maintain flavour after processing.
