Does a developing nation like India need President aka Rashtrapati and State Governors?
The office of the President is a back-up or fail-safe arrangement for when the government falls and nobody has the necessary numbers to form another Government. As far as the posts of State Governors are concerned, these are conveniences for obliging some favored persons for past loyalty or to shut them up from spouting inconvenient secrets to which they must have been privy when in the party or government. These are something like Quango(quasi autonomous national governmental organization) posts and are a huge drain on the state exchequer which the country can ill afford and can do without.Although these Governors are supposed to be non-partisan,in reality they always kow-tow to the party that appointed them.A classic example is that of a former Governor of UP who went out of his way to put spokes in the way of the BJP government. It is another matter that he demitted office in disgrace. It is high time that the center abolishes these white elephants.
