Does a cop need a probable caused to run a license plate?
No, I do not need probable cause to run your license plate but I do need a reason. Most departments have policies in place that prevent abuse. For instance if I get caught running the license plate of my ex-wife’s new boyfriend, I am in deep do-do. Running license plate numbers is an essential part of the job and allowed by law. You can request the name of a registered owner, but there are hoops for you to jump through. Part of the reason is to keep the local nut case from bringing in a list of plate numbers of people he wants to stalk or harass.
