Does a child have to see an educational psychologist before a school can request a Statutory Assessment of special educational needs?
No. The ‘Special Educational Needs Code of Practice’ (DfES 581/2001) outlines the evidence the school must provide to enable the Local Education Authority to decide if Statutory Assessment is appropriate. This relates to the provision the school has made to address any needs they have identified, and how it has sought and implemented specialist advice. The Educational Psychology Service works with schools to advise them about making appropriate arrangements to meet pupil needs. All schools are offered termly Planning and Review Meetings to discuss any issues about meeting pupil needs at individual, class and school levels.
