Does a black computer screen background use less energy than a white background?

Basically, yes. The white requires more energy mainly due to the emission of light. However, the difference is not as much as you’d think, especially on an LCD. Just think, a laptop uses less than 70 watts, and the processor is considered the most power hungry component at 40-50 watts or less. Thus the real difference is when you compare the “default” plain OS background compared to a pictured/custom background. The processing power required to keep the image drawn and redrawn on the screen much higher than the “optimized” plain standard background. Keep your PC running with low memory usage, low drive usage and low CPU utilization, and you have a very green computer.
