Does a best man always have to give a speech or toast?
I have been at wedding receptions where the best man and the maid of honour did not make speeches. You could ask what they are expecting to be your ‘duties’ and tell them you have trouble with the ‘speaking in public’ issue. I have also been to a reception where the best man read his entire speech out of a Bridal Magazine. That speech was intended to give an idea as to what to say and not to be used verbatim. I don’t even know if the names of those in the party were mentioned in that speech. In my opinion better to be no speech than one not of your own making. Good luck.
