Yes, the 4wd is an extra differential and drive shaft plus a transfer case, heavier springs, etc.make as much as 600-900 lbs difference in weight. The differential spins and creates additional drag unless you have locking/unlocking hubs. Most 4wd have lower gear ratios than 2wd. All these add up to extra fuel usage.
