Does a 20 month old understand that there is a baby in Mummys tummy?

Yes, little kids can understand to a degree that a baby could be in your stomach… and they understand to a degree that the baby comes out. Just be careful. If I eat too much and my stomach has a small bulge the next day my daughter will tell me there is another baby in there. Makes me feel bad!

I dont know, its hard to say how much they at that point understand. They might be just mimicking what you do without understanding that there is a baby in there and how that baby will come out one day etc. My middle one was 18 mos when I was nearing the end of my 3rd pregnancy and it hadnt even occurred to me that he might understand whats going on there ( my oldest was 4 and he did have a firm grasp on the concept and we had talked about it with him and so on, I hadnt even bothered to address it directly to my 18 mos old) anyways, a friend of mine was sitting next to me on the couch and my 18 mos old was sitting between my legs. My friend leaned over and tried to feel my stomach and my son lunged at her and pushed her hand away and told her “no!! my baby. ” pretty much the first time he had ever put two words behind each other.. So obviously he had some sort of understanding that something was going on.
