Neither. It is the total growth rate of a five year period. Annual growth is the total growth rate over a one year period. They are the same calculation, just over different periods of time. Compounding only occurs when you reinvest your returns. Unless specifically stated, return rates are based off of initial investment only, not additional subsequent investments.
