The goal of 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 is reconciliation. In the end, that is what we are supposed to be striving for in approaching marital unrest. Should a husband or wife choose to leave his or her spouse because of a dangerous, life-threatening situation, he or she is commanded to remain unmarried. It is regrettable that people make poor marital choices, and end up marrying a man who is physically or verbally abusive. But this hard law simply makes it that much more important to choose the right person the first time around, because we may only have one chance in a lifetime to get married. But does 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 allow a woman to divorce her husband if he is being abusive? Certainly not. It may be necessary to separate herself from this man, and most definitely send him to prison for his crimes, but this does not mean she can divorce him. Again, the goal is reconciliation, and Christ gives no permission for divorce except for adultery.
