Do young people go to prison?
Sometimes young people can be held in a prison (called being remanded) while they’re waiting for a jury trial or to be sentenced. A young person can only be held in prison if they are: • at least 15 and • they’ve been charged with a very serious offence like aggravated robbery or murder, or the judge has decided they committed a very serious offence and • their case has been moved to the District or High Court for a jury trial or sentence. A young person can only be sentenced to spend time in prison if they have pleaded guilty or been found guilty of a purely indictable offence.
