Do you want to see a Mary Rose Crewman?
The Mary Rose was a leading British warship which sank shortly after leaving port on July 19th 1545, as King Henry VIII looked on. Few of the crew or occupants survived. Late in the twentieth century the remains were raised, and work has continued ever since to give us a greater understanding of the ship, the equipment and the time. Now a new initiative is giving insight into the crew, and it’s a very visual insight: “forensic artists” have taken a skull from the wreckage and reconstructed the face, allowing us to see what he probably looked like. The BBC has the picture, although I’m not sure how they worked out the moustache and beard. Experts believe the skull belonged to a Bosun, because he was found with a Bosun’s whistle, but the BBC also reports the theory that a Bosun’s error may have caused the sinking, and I think it’s harsh to mention this as the caption to the poor chap’s picture!
