I use spurs when I ride dressage. Spurs are used for ‘lazy’ horses, either due to actual laziness or the rider does not have enough leg, such as a small child. In dressage, spurs are used because there is so much to tell the horse, the spurs offer a way to tell the horse more specifically exactly what the rider wants. If your horse is being lazy, then spurs might help. If your horse is simply not paying attention spurs might help. If your horse is bucking a bit, spurs might help. With all of these actions, the same thing would be done. A little tap, with the spurs. For a lazy horse or a horse that takes a few squeezes or a kick to get into gear or to turn, wearing spurs for a bit might help. For a horse that is starting to buck or act up in other ways, spurs can also make that reaction more pronounced – like a bigger buck.
