Wednesday February 13, 2008 Back in animation and design school, I had two instructors who always had raging arguments about whether mechanical or wooden pencils were best for animation. One was a traditionalist who pointed out that varying pressure and angle on wooden pencils helped with creating varying line weights, while mechanical pencils were too flat and thin, the lines too stark and sharp. The other argued that mechanical pencils allowed for a neater, cleaner outline with less smudging, and that careful retracing to thicken the lines worked just as well for line weight. Just the other day I ran into one of those old instructors on an online forum – as it so happened, the traditionalist.
