Do you think trophies and awards motivate kids in sports to excel?

I have mixed feelings on this one. Of course the hope of winning something can be a powerful motivator; but I question whether we introduce kids to the ethos of competition too early. Playing sports should be fun and rewarding in itself, and in any competition, most participants do not win a prize. I think kids have a very strong competitive streak anyway, and maybe we should wait until they are a bit older to introduce them to formal trophies and prizes.
