Do you think the wave of the future for college education is online programs of study?
I believe that this might happen in the long term. The principle advantages of online, rather than traditional teaching are convenience (the students can be located anywhere and can access many of the teaching materials at times which are convenient to them; the teachers can produce those materials at times which they find convenient) and financial. Unfortunately, financial pressures on the education establishment at present are substantial and it’s proving necessary to cut costs even at the cost of the quality of the education provided (increased sizes for small group teaching, reduced numbers of lecturers under increased time pressure and larger numbers of more junior, less experienced lecturers for example). It’s clear that online education can be much cheaper for the student directly — no need to move long distance and (in the case of young students who’ve been living with their parents up until that point) to move into additional costly accommodation.
