No, I think the “scientific community”, at least in theory, is a bunch of curious childs who want to know more about the world, ask questions, and instead of asking someone who thinks he knows better, they rather go and try to find out the answers for themselves. Your question seems to suggest a great conspiracy of the “scientific community” in order to deceive the man of the street into believing things that are not true. Firstly, I don’t see why scientists would need anything like that. They, unlike popes, dictators and shamans, can (in an ideal case) accept if they make mistakes, and they definitely have no reason to be afraid of losing their power – since their power, if they have any (I think most of them actually don’t) is in true knowledge, they really do and make things that make the modern world work (for example, the very computer I’m using to answer your question, or vaccines that may have saved millions of lives).
