Do you think the basis of the constitution of having checks and balances in goverment is gone?
Keep in mind that the Colbert Report is a comedy show. While they do use items that are in the news for stories, they use them in ways to entertain. The fake news shows are great for a laugh, but you should always take what they say with a grain of salt. The US Government has a three branched government to keep the checks and balances in place. I personally believe it is working fine. If a law is created that the executive branch does not like then the executive branch kills the law. If the legislative branch does not like what the executive branch is doing they create laws to stop it. And the Judicial branch insures that the laws that do get into place are constitutional, if not they remove them.
One thing our forefathers, at the time they drafted the Constitution, didn’t entirely count on was political parties. They intended for the Legislative Branch to be superior to the Executive Branch so that there would not be a concentration of too much power in one individual. They did, on the other hand, anticipate power hungry government officials, which is one basis for the system of checks and balances. I would say that we have seen from 2001 to 2006 that having one political party in control of both the Legislative and Executive Branches isn’t exactly conducive to the viability of checks and balances. This is not the first time this has happened, its just the most recent. It is not a trend in the sense that this is not the first time this has happened.
