I’ve owned an auto detailing business since 1990. I can tell you from the UP CLOSE inspection that comes from this line of businesses, that the age of “American cars suck” is now just urban legend. I can also tell you that the extra money people pay for European cars (BMW and especially Mercedes) is NOT worth the money. The “quality” of those cars is not (in my opinion) worth the extra you pay. (Audi and BWM do seem to be quite good mechanically) I will say that the most reliable cars I’ve ever encountered are from HONDA. American companies are competitive, but some (like Chrysler) remain the cheapest of the cheap… thin paint, low quality leather, etc… American companies are trying to change the reputation they earned from the 1970s when Carter’s failure to deal with OPEC forced the Big 3 to cut corners in EVERY aspect of quality.
