Do you think that the, Deliberately Lit bush fires in Australia, are an act of Terrorism?
It is not needed. Arson is considered as a criminal offence just below murder and the maximum penalty in New South Wales is 25 years in prison. I don’t know about Victoria. Several fires seem to have been started by lightning. Bushfires in southern Australia propagate by embers carried on stong winds and by crown fires, which are in tree tops and race ahead of fires on the ground because winds are stronger up there. I am in Canberra several hundred kilometres away from the fires. At about 3 this afternoon the temperature in my garage was 45 Centigrade and yesterday was even hotter. It was 33 degrees in the kitchen here last night at 9:45 pm. It is now 8pm and the temperature in this room is 35.9 centigrade. This has been going on for a week or so and temperatures in South Australia and Victoria have been even higher. It is slightly cooler here because this city is more elevated.
Technically, terrorism is an act of violence used to make a statement about a difference of opinion, by those who do not have the money or strength to wage all-out war. Only about 50% of the bush fires are deliberately lit, by people who like to cause a fiasco, and then stand back and watch the ‘fun’. They are really just arsonists and murderers. But they do cause terror, so the cap could fit, albeit loosely.
