It was useful, but not for learning German; it did, however, instill the mental discipline required for language-learning. I see that one of your contributors has trotted out the old chestnut about “Latin being the base of most European languages”. This is, of course, utter rot. There are over 60 languages in Europes; Latin is the base of only 6 national languages and a handful more of regional languages.
