I’m sure he “knew of” the ideas you mention, since they were very popular until about the 1950’s. He was, after all, a university professor of Anglo Saxon and ancient English, so these ideas would be there. However, I don’t know how far you can go in speculating what his work “means”. I do know that if you’ve read Beowulf, most of The Hobbit reads like plagiarism.
