Do you think that in a market like India, a music company can survive independently without the support of the Bollywood film industry?
A. It’s not justified to generalise and assume that Indian music industry is only made of Hindi film music. There is a significant market for regional language products and devotional products. For instance, there are a number of regional companies, who are doing exceptionally well with Punjabi and Bhojpuri albums, and are not part of any film industry. In most Indian languages, film music plays an important part but it is by no means absolutely necessary for a music company to have a presence in the film music genre, unless the company is fixated on market share, or wants to project a national image.
