The OT doesn’t condone child abuse, unless you take some of the extreme sanctions which were prescribed as a deterrant and judge them with excessively liberal values. You can’t judge one society’s situation by the values of another. I think parents that get drunk and abuse their child are being bad parents, which is exactly the way I view neglectful parents who are made so soft by liberal views that they shun away from any form of punishment. Punishment should be considered, measured and above all proportional and if there is no explanation as to why the child is being punished then how can the child hope to learn from the punishment? Also praise is important like punishment must be considered and proportional. People who give praise too freely turn that praise into empty words and the child derives no satisfaction from the praise and punishment that is too frequently applied likewise looses it’s power.
