I highly recommend the documentary film “STEEP” which is a new movie about extreme downhill snow-skiing. You may get some valuable insights into the psyche of the practitioners of this sport which you may then be able to extend to other sports. If you want my opinion, I believe the reasons may be different for different people and you probably can’t say all extreme sports enthusiasts have a mental problem of some type. There are definitely some that do have a problem. Personally, I wouldn’t do what some of these guys/gals do because I would put my loved-ones first before I would go out and get myself seriously injured or killed. I prefer to take other risks which can pay off and benefit my loved ones ALSO and not just myself. So if anything, I think they may be a bit selfish. In the film, the idea is presented that these endeavors have a lot to do with self-discovery and the journey into manhood. With that I completely agree, that someone should find out what they are capable of before
