Do you think Japanese horror movies are better than Hollywood horror movies?
Depends what you want from a horror movie. Good Japanese horror films tend to be more creepy and/or disturbing than hollywood ones. Audition for example. If you want some good splatstick though, you want to stay with braindead, evil dead and reanimator films. (Most of these can’t really be called hollywood movies though). If you watch horror to be scared or disturbed Japanese will generally be the way to go. If you watch horror to have a bit of fun, I don’t think you’d prefer Japanese. ***** To the additional details question, I don’t know if you’d get many of them dubbed or not – most likely they’d be subtitled. I think subtitles are better than dubbing though. Dubbing is only good for making martial arts films comical.
I’m not all that into horror, but a friend of mine did Hollywood v. Japanese horror for his media studies project, and he showed me this scene from The Ring and then showed me the Japanese original, and the Japanese one was ten times scarier. The way the girl climbed out of the screen was jsut done so much better, and from what he told me of the plot differences, Hollywood sounded dumbed down and with less soul.
back in the day there were some good ones, but now i think all horror movies suck kind of bad, and japanese ones even though they are highly rated, i just see them as so GENERIC each one is so similar with the same shocks i can barely label them as better than hollywood, but all in all the japanese ones just barely inch ahead hollywood.
