Do you think dogs can understand human speech beyond simple commands?

Dogs are more intelligent then people think. But I do not think they understand our language as much as people hope. They understand more the ‘way’ in which we say things. For example if you always use the same gesture and tone of voice when giving a command to your dog, it will pick up on that first instead of the word used. This is the same with other things. Such as you could say ‘I’m going to take the dog for a walk’ but your dog wouldn’t understand walk if you said it in a different tone of voice. But as soon as you moved to get its lead it would suddenly know what was about to happen.
