Do you think animals who have attacked or killed people should be euthanized or spared?
I don’t think he should be euthanized. And I don’t believe that other domesticated animals should either. I think the whale should be released to the wild, unless there’s something that prevents them from doing that. And in that case, I think that anybody who volunteers to work with him knows what he/she is getting in to. That sounds insensitive, but he’s killed before. That’s common knowledge. The trainers knew that going into that pen. As far as other animals go, I think that most of that can be chalked up to human error. We’ve bred dogs like rotties and pits to be aggressive. We’ve trained them to attack; and encouraged those who attack best to breed. We’ve killed the pacifists. Generally (NOT ALWAYS) the “killer” dogs are encouraged to be killers. If anything, the human breeders, owners, and trainers should be punished, and the dog should be rehabilitated.
He is a wild animal and shouldn’t be in captivity – why not release him, or better still, not capture animals to put them on display for our entertainment. Orcas (Killer Whales) are intelligent creatures and need thousands of miles of ocean in which to roam and hunt their food – it is hardly their fault that tragedies such as this happen when we put them in a small pool and then dress the trainers up in wet suits so that they look like seals! It is incredibly sad that this happened, but to punish the whale for doing what his instinct tells him to do, is ridiculous! These animals are called “Killer Whales”, not Peaceful Whales, or Benevolent Whales – they hunt to eat, and we forget that at our peril. Incidentally, I was at Sea World, Orlando, with my family just over a week before this happened .
