To answer the opening question…yes. I think we are currently going through a swing of the pendulum, toward the conservative side. To address the other question, America had it’s own “Victorian Period” that was parallel to England’s. Essentially, America was still very much influenced by English society, and American society sought to mirror it in every way…from the fashions, to the architecture, to the customs. Americans, ever since, seem to idealize the Victorian Era, more than any other (a strong second being the fifties…HUGE parallels there!). It continues to influence different aspects of our society, and I think this comes down to the “core” values of many conservative Americans. And there is a very strong conservative base in America. The idea of the Victorian woman is seen as the ideal. It’s interesting to note that it is from the Victorian Era that the (current) concept of chivalry came about…Victorians had a huge fascination with the Medieval Era, and Arthurian legends
