I never do. I trash all such offers. The amount of new junk mail you’ll get from subscribing is reason enough. But no one makes an offer like this as a favor to you. There is only one reason, and that is to make money (and from where, do you think?). They expect that they will more than recover the cost of those $1 books–which of course they paid a lot less for than you would–by what they make from you later. Those are “lost leader” items, and the point is to hook you in. If you read the book club membership agreement, you will probably see that you have to buy so many books in a certain period of time at the “special members’ price.” (And how much do those same titles cost on Amazon or at Barnes & Noble?) Then you will receive books “automatically” that you have to either return or pay for unless you cancel fast enough. And what’s the shipping charge going to be? Remember, you can get free shipping on Amazon if you order more than $25 worth. So just save up your orders in the ’Save
