This is used for compression. We earlier started with MPEG-1, and moved towards 1.5 and then MPEG-2 became the industry standard. Today majority of DTH operators all over the world are using MPEG-2. The basic difference between the two is that MPEG-4 has better algorithms, better compression techniques as compared to the MPEG-2.
